Zombiepalooza, Cary’s zombie-themed screening party, will feature locally produced short films. Local filmmakers and hobbyists are invited to get creative and tell their zombie stories in one to five minutes. This year’s event will include pre-film activities. Plan for three-legged races (TBD whether the third leg is attached to another live human or not), undead face-painting, a zombie playground, food trucks (hopefully one will include BRAINS in their menu), and more!

Pumpkin Flotilla

Time: 4 - 7 PM

Location: Bond Park Boathouse

Enjoy an evening of music, food, and Halloween activities while the sun goes down. Once the sun sets, carved pumpkins will be floated around Bond Lake to light up the night. Want to see your pumpkin on the water? Drop off your carved pumpkins at the Bond Park Boathouse the day before the event from 4 - 6 p.m.

Sinister Story Showdown: A Horror Short Story Competition!

Calling all writers and fans of the macabre! Write and submit your most terrifying tale for the Sinister Story Showdown, presented by Durham County Library and the Horror Writers Association. Whether psychological, supernatural, or classic horror, we're looking for spine-tingling stories to haunt our judges' dreams. Submissions will be accepted until 11:59pm on Friday, October 11th.

Winners will be announced at Saturday Night Dead: An Evening of Horror Trivia and Tales at Boxyard RTP on Saturday, October 26. The top three entries will have their stories read aloud and performed by members of the Horror Writers Association!

Winners will have their stories printed, bound, and added to the Library's collection, and more!

Contest Rules:

  • Contestants must be 18+
  • Entries must be original, unpublished work
  • Entries must not use AI in their creation
  • 1,200 word limit
  • All entries must be typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced, with 1-inch margins. Entries must include a cover page with a title, the author's name, and the author's city of residence

New Hope Valley Railway’s (NHVR) family-friendly Track or Treat: Halloween Express takes place on October 12, 19 and 26, 2024, with departures each day at 2:15, 3:30, 4:45, 6:30, and 7:45 PM.

During the spooky but family-friendly train ride, visitors will see scenes of flying witches, smoking cauldrons, large pumpkin faces, Count Dracula and other friendly creatures. Halloween costumes are encouraged.

New Hope Valley Railway’s (NHVR) family-friendly Track or Treat: Halloween Express takes place on October 12, 19 and 26, 2024, with departures each day at 2:15, 3:30, 4:45, 6:30, and 7:45 PM.

During the spooky but family-friendly train ride, visitors will see scenes of flying witches, smoking cauldrons, large pumpkin faces, Count Dracula and other friendly creatures. Halloween costumes are encouraged.

In addition, the Boo ‘n’ Brew Train Ride takes place Friday, October 25, 2024, at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7:45 p.m. The Halloweens decorations and the actors in the woods will be the same as the Track ‘n’ Treat ride, but there will be food and beer available for purchase.

Fuquay-Varina Haunted Trail (Full Fright Trail)

Full Fright is designed to frighten. It is a terrifying walk in the dark through the woods with unexpected surprises around every turn. It is not recommended for children under the age of 10. Children between the ages of 10 to 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

Boo & Brew Historical Ghost Tour in Downtown Sanford

Time: 5:00 - 10:00 PM

Location: Depot Park, Downtown Sanford - 229 Wicker Street (Hugger Mugger Brewing Courtyard)

2024 Boo & Brew Historical Walking Tours will be offered on October 24, 25 and 26.  Each tour will begin at 229 Wicker Street (Hugger Mugger Brewing Courtyard) at 6:00 pm. Covering 2 blocks of Downtown Sanford, the tour lasts approximately 1 hour. Participants will learn about the 5 ghosts that occupy buildings in Downtown Sanford. The cost of the tour is $5.00 per person and will include the tour as well as a beverage of choice. 

Clayton Harvest Festival

Historical Ghost Walk in Smithfield's Riverside Cemetery

Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Location: Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC

Cost: $3.00-5.00

Johnston County Heritage Center is hosting a ghost walk through Riverside Cemetery, at Front and Church Streets, in Smithfield, on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

At this event, six 18th century personalities will be brought to live by interpreters.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Free for children under age 5. There’s no preregistration. First-come, first-served.

Tours start from beside St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and last approximately 30 minutes. They’ll run through 8 p.m.

The tour ends at the Historic Hastings House, where author Jimmy Parker will sign copies of his book, Ghostly North Carolina.

Halloween at Burwell

Get ready for a frightfully fun Halloween at the Burwell School Historic Site! From 5 to 7 PM, families are invited to join us for a Halloween-themed craft session, perfect for young ghouls and goblins. We’ll provide the materials; you bring the creativity!

But that’s not all—does the Burwell School have a ghost? Staff have been hearing some unexplained bumps recently... At 7:30 PM, the site will transform for a spine-tingling special tour, complete with costumed guides who will share eerie tales and historical insights. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to uncover the mysteries of our site!

Best of all, this event is free to all. Come for the crafts, stay for the chills!
